Do you realize that God gives us sufficient grace to make it through each day?

I remember how this revelation came to me years ago when my husband was away from home for an extended period of time for work. I had to pick up the slack around the home. We had two young boys and I worked full time outside the home. Interestingly enough, problems did not wait until my husband came home.

Life continued in his absence. We lived in the country and I had to manage all the household chores—including eliminating scorpions and rattlesnakes!

One day, when I described what I was dealing with to a friend, she said, “Oh my! I don’t know how you can do all that! I couldn’t do it.”

I confess that comment did not encourage me. But what came out of my mouth next surprised me, mostly because I spoke the words before I even thought about them.

I said, “The grace is not there for you because you don’t need it. I need it and I have it, like manna. God gives each of us the grace we need to get through that day.”

The Israelites lived on manna for forty years in the wilderness. The Lord rained down food from heaven for them to eat each day. The people were instructed to go out and gather as much as they needed for that day.

“So the people of Israel did as they were told. Some gathered a lot, some only a little. But when they measured it out, everyone had just enough. Those who gathered a lot had nothing left over, and those who gathered only a little had enough. Each family had just what it needed.” (Exodus 16:17-18 NLT).

The people were not to gather extra and save it except for the day before the Sabbath when they were to gather double. The Lord did not send manna on the Sabbath.

The interesting thing about manna—it did not save except on the day before the Sabbath. What they gathered only lasted for that day.

That’s how God’s grace works—we have what we need for this day.

The Apostle Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 16:9, “But He said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is perfected in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly in my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest on me” (BSB).

God’s grace is sufficient. Sufficient means “adequate for the purpose; enough.”

This lesson returned to me after my son was sentenced to prison and another well-meaning friend said, “I don’t know how you are handling this.”

“God’s given me the grace to walk through this. You can’t understand because you don’t need this type of grace. God’s grace is like manna. We have what we need for each day.”

My friend, whatever you are walking through, even if it feels overwhelming, know that God’s grace is sufficient—it is enough to see you through today!
